This is a highly collectable, old Tibetan melon-shaped Pema Raka carnelian bead necklace. The name ‘Pema Raka’ comes the Sanskrit words “rakta padma”, meaning red or blood lotus. The original carnelian likely came from the Deccan Traps, in India, but the rough stones were probably made into beads in Tibet, as they conform to the local style. They are highly valued by collectors as the stones are believed to enhance healing and to protect against evil. They could be 300-2000 years old, with a nice level of wear and a noticeable patina. The beads have an intense, translucent reddish-orange color. Sometimes referred to as ‘the poor man’s coral.’
Pema raka carnelian beads are hard to find and highly appreciated in Tibet, the Himalayan areas and among bead collectors.
These beads are very worn, but in good condition with signs of hole wear and weathering.
