Ernemann is one of the landmarks of the German photographic industry. Heinrich Ernemann founded his company in 1889. By the 1920s, 3,000 employees worked in his Dresden workshops.

This Ernemann 6.5cm x 9cm plate camera dates from 1917 and is Heag 0 – Type A. This is the early ‘A’ model as it doesn’t have the ability to shift the lens vertically, unlike the later Type B.

Description

The Heag is a simple model made of wood with a metal front panel adorned with the manufacturer’s name. Even though this was the entry-level model aimed at a public not entirely new to photography, its construction is very meticulous, offering adjustments for focus, aperture, three shutter speeds, and two time exposures.

The camera has an Ernemann shutter with 3 speeds (1/25 to 1/100), plus 0 & Z. The camera’s lens is a Doppel-Objektiv f/11. The camera is supplied with the original ground glass focusing screen, which is working well, plus three 6.5cm x 9 cm metal slide plates, shutter release and carry case (slightly worn with missing stitches).

The camera shutter and apertures are working on all settings. The camera body and lens are in very good condition considering the camera is well over 100 years old. The bellows appear light-tight in torch tests, but I would still recommend a dark cloth should be placed over them if you wanted to take photos with the camera. The camera measures just 12cm high, 8.5cm wide and 5cm deep when closed.
